Russia is one of the popular study destinations among Malaysians wanting to study medicine, after Indian. Russia is among the most affordable and popular destinations for higher education. There are many Russian universities that offer medical studies. However, not all of them are recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). But what makes Russia so appealing to many students from around the world is its history in the field. According to the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), the following five institutions are accredit in Malaysia: First Moscow State Medical University. Formerly known as Moscow Medical Academy, established in 1930 and is one of Russia’s best institutions in the field. They offer a preparatory course for one year, 6-year medical programme conducted fully in English, and postgraduate studies. The facilities in this institution are state-of-the-art laboratories, best medical library in Russia, clinical centre with 18 diverse clinics, most advanced practical classes, fully-equipped classrooms, and newly built apartment-like hostels which makes it one of the best university. Second, Russian National Research Medical University was established in 1906 and has 100 years of experience and academic excellence in the field of medicine. This university is known for the first Paediatric Faculty in the world so those who want to pursue in paediatric this university is best known for it. The university teaches in English for the first part of the study and once the students start their clinical, studies will be conducted in Russian due to interacting with patients and other medical personnel. The university has state of the art classrooms, laboratories, fully equipped library, advanced practical facilities, and students’ accommodation within the vicinity of the campus. Next, Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) established in 1935, KSMU was the first university in Russia to offer their entire medical programme fully in English. A medical degree from Kursk State Medical University isn’t only recognised and accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council, it is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNESCO and General Medical Council (G.M.C) of major European countries, including the UK, France and other international medical boards so students are able to continues or work in these country as a doctor or specialist. Studying medicine in Russia is so much cheaper compare to Malaysia. However, things are now much different as medical degree is much cheaper overseas especially in Russia. Prices from RM12,400 for six years courses it’s below RM150,000 for six years of medical courses but in Malaysia its almost half a million for six years course which is not include living expenses. The Russian Medical Degree is subsidised by the government, hence the lower price. Cost of living varies from city to city and depends on the student’s lifestyle. It is recommended that students coming to Russia have at least RM500 to RM600 a month for living expenses, and RM500 to RM760 especially for those living in Moscow which is so much reasonable than Malaysia plus The Russian government allows international students to work 15 hours in a week. During vacations, they can work full-time. A part-time job helps a student to meet the living costs of staying overseas. Many of Malaysian parents consider sending their children to study medicine in Russia due to attractive fee costs. It is no longer communist but Russia still believes that education must be affordable and keeps fees relatively low and until today Russia has the world’s highest literacy rate. Many Malaysian students will further their studies in medicine at Russia than since it’s much affordable and have great universities for students to practice medicine rather than spending a huge amount of money in Malaysia, where else you can spend less and study abroad without having to come up with a large sum of cash.
